The purpose of Politics Unmasked is to provide a clear, reliable source of information on conflicts around the world to raise public awareness, and to foster an informed and beneficial response to these conflicts.

There are comprehensive organizations tracking, organizing and sharing information about most other major issues of international relations. The World Bank provides a comprehensive record of financial information for every country in the world. Freedom House and Polity IV provide a clear account of the level of democracy for every country in the world. Transparency International provides an in-depth analysis of corruption for 176 countries around the world. And yet – despite the prevalence of intrastate armed-conflict and the immense violence and destruction they create – there is no organization providing such a clear and comprehensive account of armed conflicts around the world. Politics Unmasked – Center for Conflict Analysis and Tracking (C-CAT) seeks to fill this absence and to provide a clear analysis of recent and ongoing conflicts, particularly armed conflicts, around the world.

Politics Unmasked is committed to bridging the gap between academic research and everyday observers of the world. The authors at Politics Unmasked conduct rigorous, academic research on each of the conflicts, then use this expertise to provide clear, succinct explanations that are readily accessible even to those who do not study conflicts professionally. The Center for Conflict Analysis and Tracking hopes that making this information more readily available, and more comprehensible will help to bring these conflicts out of the dark, and into the public discourse. Public ignorance of these conflicts has allowed the violence to continue in each of the conflicts studied on this site. Increased public awareness of crises around the world can lead (and has led) to international interventions and humanitarian action that has ended wars and saved countless lives. By creating a public account explaining ongoing conflicts and putting them into context, the Politics Unmasked Center for Conflict Analysis and Tracking hopes to foster this awareness to promote appropriate responses to help resolve conflicts around the world.

Politics Unmasked in the product of a shared vision and the input (in some cases accidental) of a variety of people. During a drive back from New York City with her boyfriend, Aneri was going to great length to explain a conflict (most likely Russian aggression in Eastern Europe), when he looked over at her and said, “you need to start a blog and write it so I can understand.”

She had been toying with this idea for a while, and this offhand comment gave her the idea to create a website that explained conflicts to everyone, not just people who devote endless hours to reading about each conflict. The goal of the blog quickly became to unpack conflicts, and to explain its basic elements; how did it start? Who were the main parties? What were the key events? And what was the international community doing to help resolve it?

Over time, the rest of the organization evolved and developed. Aneri gradually developed a clear mandate and goal: to explain understudied conflicts. Aneri developed a plan and an organized approach on how all of this information was going to be presented. Over time, Politics Unmasked transitioned from a personal blog into an educational non-profit organization committed to improving the understanding of armed-conflicts around the world. Eventually, others joined in the project, and with the help of Karsten Kip, Sebastian Gold, and others, Politics Unmasked gradually took on its current form.
